MATTHEW WOOD (#8 NORTH AMERICAN SKATER) VS. MIKHAIL GULYAYEV (#8 EUROPEAN SKATER) PLAYER COMPARISON

As a freshman at the University of Connecticut this season, Wood had 34 points (11 goals, 23 assists) and was a +7 in 35 games. This placed him just outside the top 50 scoring leaders in the NCAA. He earned his college opportunity by registering 85 points (45 goals, 40 assists) in 46 games last season with the Victoria Grizzlies of the BCHL. Although tall and rangy (6’3″, 190 lbs.) with excellent puck protection skills, the knock on him in his transition to the next level is a lack of foot speed.

Russian-born Mikhail Gulyayev is an offensive defenseman renowned for his lightning-quick ability to shift gears on the rush. This season in Russia, Gulyayev has 25 points (2 goals, 23 assists) in 22 games and is +12 in the MHL (Russia’s top junior league). He also has 5 assists and a +3 rating in 25 games professionally (KHL & SHL). In recognition of his efforts, Gulyayev was named the MHL Defenseman of the Week in late November.

Both solid first round prospects, Gulyayev stands out to me in this comparison. His offensive skills and ability to control the pace of play are at an NHL premium. Also, the fact that he is fairly polished defensively bodes well for a transition to the National Hockey League. His being under contract until the 2024-25 season is a bit concerning, but may be beneficial for his development prior to his arrival in North America.
