Attached is the above-referenced prospect report by Ben Gehrels of Dobber Prospects. I agree with the statement that Detroit repeatedly has passed on “higher-octane players again and again in favour of prospects known more for their two-way ability.” However, I respectfully disagree with referring to Simon Edvinsson’s career as being close to moving into “post-hype territory.” The 21-year-old defenseman appeared in 16 games for the Wings this season, and became a stalwart in Detroit’s playoff push. Head coach Derek Lalonde described Edvinsson as being “a big boost for us,” and also added that “[h]e breaks pucks out, manages his game, has the long stick, keeping plays alive — he’s been really, really good.” See the attached Detroit Free Press article. Down the stretch this season, he occupied a top four position on Detroit’s blue line, averaging 18 minutes per game while being paired with veteran Jeff Petry. See attached article published April 3 by MLive.com.
It is clear to me that Edvinsson is living up to expectations, and then some.
