12/29/24 USA / Finland World Junior Game Recap

Team Finland won this game 4-3 in overtime. Being in the barn for this game, I kept checking to see if I was watching the right US team. The US was not sharp at all, missing passes by a wide margin in what normally would be tape-to-tape connections to wide-open teammates. They also appeared very hesitant, shooting when they should pass and vice versa. Additionally, in this tournament Trey Augustine (DET 2023, 2nd round 41st overall) has not been the door-shutting goaltender I’m used to seeing. Even Finland’s overtime goal deflected off his glove before crossing the goal line in what should have been a fairly easy glove save. I chalked up his very average game against Team Germany to a lack of concentration in a blowout win (10-4). However, now I’m not so sure something else isn’t compromising his on-ice performance. I’m assuming we’ll find out much more in Team USA’s New Year’s Eve matchup versus Team Canada.
