OHL right winger Porter Martone, ranked #6 among NA skaters by NHL central scouting and #4 in Craig Button’s most recent draft rankings, impressed both teammates and coaches at this year’s World Championship. Although held off the score sheet in the two tournament games in which he played, he was lauded for his maturity and work ethic on and off the ice.
Martone’s unique blend of skill, physicality, and high hockey IQ have scouts to a man projecting him to be a difference-maker at the pro level. To that end, Button’s post-lottery mock draft has him going 2nd overall to San Jose. Likewise, Corey Pronman has him ranked 3rd in his May 16 article focusing on NHL playoff skillsets.
