Boston College center James Hagens remains non-committal regarding his return to school following this summer’s draft. Hagens’s decision depends in large part upon where he is selected, and his fit within the immediate scheme of the organization choosing him.
Although Hagens is ranked as the number 3 prospect behind OHL players Matthew Shaefer and Michael Misa, the New York Islanders have the first pick. There has been much speculation the Isles may very well select the Long Island native to generate anticipation and excitement among its fan base. If that were to happen, the overwhelming likelihood is that he will forego his remaining college eligibility and compete for the big club this fall. This is especially true considering there have been only two #1 overall picks in the past 20 years who did not immediately turn pro after the draft, being St. Louis pick Erik Johnson in 2006 (returned to the University of Minnesota) and Buffalo’s Owen Power (returned to the University of Michigan).
On a different note, a “perfect fit” argument can be made should Hagens be chosen at #2 by San Jose or #3 by Chicago. Featuring young players such as Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith in San Jose, as well as Connor Bedard and Frank Nazar in Chicago, Hagens’ selection by either club seemingly would make him a most welcomed addition to their respective rebuilds.
Of course, this is all speculation. We will have to wait until next month for the answers to these scenarios.
