Team Canada scored three goals in periods 1 and 2, then added four more in the final frame, to best France 10-2 in its final preliminary game. With his 9 points (2G 7A), Connor McDavid sits just two points away from the record of 11 points scored by an NHL’er in a single Olympics (both Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu accomplished the feat).
Team USA plays its final preliminary game today at 3:10 ET, likewise looking to win their group. The US beat Denmark 6-3 in preliminary action yesterday. Should the Americans go on to capture the gold medal, it will be the third time this has occurred in team member Brock Nelson’s family. Nelson’s uncle is Dave Christian, who was part of 1980’s improbable “Miracle on Ice” victory. Also, Nelson’s grandfather, Bill Christian, was a member of the 1960 Team USA side that won the gold medal in Squaw Valley, California.
