Ownership Interests in NHL Franchises Continue to Change Hands With Maple Leafs Transfer

Last week, the NHL approved the sale of the Tampa Bay Lightning franchise by Jeff Vinik to a Doug Ostrander-led investment group. Another pending transfer of power is the purchase by Rogers Communication of Bell Communication’s 37.5% stake in Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment. This acquisition is an addition to Rogers’ existing 37.5% stake in MLSE, making it the entity’s controlling owner. The vast difference in the franchise valuations is compelling, yet understandable given their impact on their respective communities.
