Sascha Boumedienne and Alexander Zetterberberg, both Swedes (although Boumedienne was born in Finland), are the two draft-eligible players competing for Boston University in the Frozen Four this coming weekend. Each player is looking to enhance his status in NHL central scouting’s final rankings.
Boumedienne is first year draft-eligible, and is a left-handed d-man ranked 18th by NHL central scouting among North American skaters. He uses his size (6’2″) to shut down opponents with excellent reach, mobility, and stick presentation. Boumedienne also possesses the offensive upside many elite defenders have in the modern game. Most ranking systems list him as a late 1st round or early 2nd round pick.
Zetterberg is in his second year of draft eligibility after being passed over in 2024. He is the second cousin of retired NHL forward and Hall of Fame candidate Henrik Zetterberg, and is ranked 212th among North American skaters by central scouting. Before last year’s draft, some touted him as a potential top-six forward in the NHL one day due to exceptional puck skills and hockey smarts. However, his lack of size (5’8″) and only average speed led teams to pass on him at that time.
Boston University faces Penn State in the second semifinal game this Thursday at 8:30, preceded by Denver and Western Michigan.
