4/24/25: Thoughts Following Team USA / Team Czechia Matchup at the U-18 World Junior Hockey Championship

Team USA walked away from this game with a 4-2 victory over Team Czechia by virtue of scoring three goals (one empty-netter) in the final 2:30 of the contest.

I couldn’t help but compare American Blake Fiddler (#26 NA skater per central scouting) and Czech Radim Mrtka (#5 NA skater) in watching this game, as they are both large and mobile right shot d-men (Fiddler is 6’4″ 209 lbs., Mrtka 6’6″ 198 lbs.). Also, both had a goal in this game, each to tie the game (Fiddler at two, Mrtka at one). Both use their size and reach very well in defending, although Fiddler is a bit more physical at this point. However, Mrtka is the smoother skater and better puck handler. Having said that, the higher ranking given to Mrtka is appropriate given his offensive upside.

Other players making an impression on me were American forward Cullen Potter (#22 NA skater) for his elite speed and offensive creativity (scored GWG), and American d-man Drew Schock (#182 NA skater) for his offensive instincts & involvement. For Czechia, the speed and puck skills of forward Tomas Poletin were impressive (#14 Int. skater), as well as the quick release and mobility of d-man Vladimir Dravecky (2026 DE).
