Attached is an article by Tony Ferrari at The Hockey News regarding threats to take forward Gavin McKenna’s spot as the first overall pick in the 2026 draft. The players discussed are definitely high-end, and garner their place in the top 10 prospects in this draft class. However, I do not believe any of these players will take the top spot at next summer’s selection process. Not only is McKenna a unique talent, his story of a small-town kid as mature off the ice as he is on it is a topic all its own, and will only gain momentum as the draft approaches. This is very reminiscent of 2025 top selection Matthew Schaefer, whose ability to overcome injury and family tragedy paired with his on-ice attributes to make him a runaway for the top choice.
Having said that, I am still of the mind that McKenna and Ivar Stenberg will go #1 and #2, respectively, and the other players discussed will do battle for the remaining spots.
