The first two attachments are links to very recent articles regarding current and/or prospective investments made by private equity firms in the professional sports world. The first article details the recent purchase by PE firm Sportsology Capital Partners of a minority stake in Major League Baseball’s Texas Rangers. The second article discusses the PE firm Otro Capital in its raising of over $1 billion to finance future purchases of ownership interests of professional sports entities.
The primary difference between the philosophies of these PE firms is the percentage of ownership each seeks from its investments. While the Sportsology/Texas Rangers deal involved a minority stake in the Rangers’ organization, Otro seeks to obtain controlling interests in its franchise purchases. Currently, Otro’s philosophy rules out acquiring a stake in most North American pro sports teams, as major sports leagues such as the NFL and NBA do not permit investment funds to control its franchises. This prohibition also is in place in the NHL, as it has permitted minority ownership interest in its franchises since 2021, but nothing more. The third link is to an article discussing in further detail the application of NHL rules to this situation.
Whether controlling interests of North American sports franchises ultimately will be available to PE firms is to be determined. Investors certainly will continue to clamor for the opportunity to engage in this investment, as the astounding return these organizations have generated in recent years is impossible to ignore. However, the sometimes competing goals of maximizing profits versus winning championships may hold such investment goals at bay.
