5/2/26: Latest on Brady Tkachuk Trade Winds

Despite repeated denials by Ottawa captain Brady Tkachuk and the Senators’ organization, discussions of a possible trade continue to circulate. Tkachuk’s no-movement clause, and his stated commitment to the Senators and their fan base, have done nothing to dampen the notion of his suspected departure.

During his press conference on April 29, 2026 after Ottawa’s playoff loss to Carolina, Tkachuk clarified his stance on his future in Ottawa: While expressing frustration with the trade talk surounding him, and noting that none of this discussion has originated from him or the organization, Tkachuk reaffirmed his dedication to both the city and the team. He also took responsibility for the playoff loss to the Hurricanes, noting he “didn’t play good enough” after failing to record a point in the series.

In addition to Tkachuk’s public stance on the matter, management has stood firmly behind their captain. To that end, General Manager Steve Staios dismissed the trade rumors as “nonsense,” and has affirmed that there have been no internal discussions regarding moving Tkachuk.

Having said that, the Senators are expected to explore roster adjustments this offseason, including the potential departure of several veterans to create space for younger talent in its organization, such as d-man Carter Yakemchuk. Ottawa is projected to have approximately $17.4 million in cap space this summer to pursue roster upgrades. With respect to Tkachuk’s contract, he has two years remaining on a 7-year deal signed in 2021, and carrying an annual cap hit of $8,205,714. He is eligible to extend this contract in July 2027.
