As expected, 2026 first overall pick Gavin McKenna signed a 3-year entry-level contract with Toronto. The deal carries with it an annual cap hit of $1,075,000.
McKenna has seen plenty of on-ice action this week at the Maple Leafs’ development camp. Initially, McKenna was wearing his favorite #72 jersey. That abruptly changed with Toronto’s signing of free-agent goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who has worn the number throughout his career. Showing his maturity and team-first mentality, McKenna immediately relinquished this number to Bobrovsky. McKenna currently has no assigned number, as his other go-to favorites (numbers 9 and 27) have been retired by Toronto.
McKenna’s signing marks the official end of his college hockey career at Penn State University. He had a prolific one season stint with the Nittany Lions, breaking school records for most points in one game (8), most points in a season by a freshman (51), and becoming the first PSU player to win the Big Ten scoring title. Prior to his time in “Hockey Valley,” McKenna registered 79 goals and 244 points in 133 games with Medicine Hat in the WHL.
