Attached is a link to the current standings for the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, in which Canada and the US sit atop the standings. This tournament is far from over, however. In Canada’s group (Group A), Switzerland has made a significant amount of noise thus far. In Group B, Czechia, as always, poses a significant threat to take home the gold.
Prior to Canada’s dominance of Switzerland in the opening contest for both clubs, the Swiss did jump out to an early 2-1 lead, albeit short-lived. To their credit, the Swiss did not quit until the final buzzer despite being outplayed, in fact scoring the last goal of the game in the third. This effort carried over to Switzerland’s Day 2 match-up with Sweden, a wild 7-6 affair in which the Swiss prevailed with two seconds remaining on a goal from 2027 forward draft prospect Sebastian Weber.
With respect to Czechia, the Americans seemingly held a comfortable 6-2 lead heading into the third of that game. The Czechs, however, scored two unanswered 3rd-period goals to significantly tighten up the final score. Like the Swiss, Czechia used this effort as momentum to rout the Germans 8-3 on Day 2, thus outscoring its opponents 10-3 in the last four periods. Czechia plays Finland today, and the winner will advance to the semi-finals.
All teams are back in action today. After an off-day tomorrow, the tournament semi-finals will be played on Friday.
