At the recently-played World Junior Summer Showcase in Windsor, I went to the Canadian Brewhouse for a post-game burger and beverage when I noticed the below picture of actor Keanu Reeves on the wall. At first glance, I simply thought it was a photo commemorating his visit to the establishment. As it turns out, this was actually one of a series of pictures taken during his August 2024 signing of a one-day contract with the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires.
Reeves’ contract obviously was a symbolic gesture (benefiting the Windsor-Essex Mental Health Association), but his talent for the game was very real. Reeves moved with his mother to Toronto at a very young age, and excelled in his youth hockey career as a goaltender (he actually was born in Beirut to an English mother and American father, but always has held only Canadian citizenship). This led to a tryout with the Spits as a 15-year-old, which was cut short due to injury. However, by that time he already decided he wanted to become an actor. In pursuit of his career aspirations, he moved to Los Angeles shortly thereafter by way of a green card obtained by his American step-father. Since then he has embarked on a four-decades-long acting career, collecting numerous accolades along the way. His feature film debut? “Youngblood” in 1986, where he played a goaltender in the junior hockey cult classic co-starring Patrick Swayze and Rob Lowe.
As if Reeves’ life story is not diverse enough, once established in LA he co-founded the rock band “Dogstar,” which enjoyed moderate success in the 1990’s, broke up in 2002, and reunited during the covid pandemic. This reunion since has culminated in the release of two albums, the latest being in May of this year.
