As the entire hockey world knows, Hobey Baker winner Isaac Howard would not sign a contract with Tampa Bay at the conclusion of Michigan State’s season. At the time of Howard’s refusal to sign, most speculated it was due to the Lightning’s insistence that he play under an AHL contract for the rest of this season, and that his entry-level contract would not commence until 2025-26. It appears fairly clear now that Howard simply does not want to play for Tampa.
To that end, many NHL teams are or will be vying for his services. The attached article suggests Detroit quite possibly could be the best fit for the Lightning’s top prospect, should Tampa move him prior to his becoming a free agent. Not only are two of his MSU teammates Red Wings’ prospects (goaltender Trey Augustine and center Redmond Savage), but more importantly he would fit in nicely with Detroit’s impressive array of young talent. To that end, the same could be said of Chicago’s roster, which also consists of youthful players already impacting the big club. Additionally, both venues offer the Wisconsin-born Howard the chance to begin his pro career much closer to home, provided that is of major importance to the young man.
However this plays out, this situation provides a very interesting topic as the draft approaches and many deal-making possibilities present themselves.
