Fifteen-year-old d-man Kade O’Rourke of the Toronto Jr. Canadiens is seeking exceptional status from the OHL, which would allow him to compete in the league prior to attaining the age of 16. If granted, the Texas-born O’Rourke would become the first American without dual citizenship to obtain such status. The last player to enter the league as an underager was Shawn Day, who is a citizen of both the US and Canada.
Most recently, O’Rourke and the Jr. Canadiens were finalists at the OHL Cup, held in Toronto annually. The OHL Cup serves as a prelude to the OHL draft by showcasing the top U16 teams from Ontario and the mid-western US for evaluation. O’Rourke recorded 10 points in the tournament, including the game-winning goal in the semifinals, to help his team advance. For his efforts, O’Rourke was named to the tournament’s all-star team.
