5/7/26: NHL Prospect/Brother Combos Having Big Impact in College & Major Junior Hockey

Brothers in hockey are nothing new, from Montreal’s Gabriel “Rocket” and Henri “Pocket Rocket” Richard to New Jersey’s & Minnesota’s Jack, Luke & Quinn Hughes. In addition to today’s established NHL players, numerous brother prospects dot the amateur hockey landscape. Such notables include Casey & Teddy Mutryn of Boston College; Max, Zam & Victor Plante of the University of Minnesota-Duluth; and twins Liam & Markus Ruck of the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers.

Both forwards, the Mutryns will reunite at Boston College in 2026-27. Teddy (SJS 2025, 3rd round 95th overall) will be coming from the QMJHL’s Moncton Wildcats, and Casey (24th-ranked North American skater for 2026 draft) from the US National Development Team Program (USNTDP). Teddy, who also competed for the USNTDP, had 68 points (31G 37A) in 54 regular-season games. In the QMJHL playoffs, he is tied for second in league scoring with 22 points (7G 15A), and has helped lead the Wildcats to the Championship series versus Chicoutimi. Casey is projected to be a late first-round to mid-second round pick in 2026, and had 5 points (2G 3A) in 5 games at the recently-played U18 World Junior Championship.

All forwards, the Plantes also will compete in college hockey next season, for the NCAA’s UMD Bulldogs. Victor (42nd-ranked North American skater) will move on from the USNTDP to join current Bulldogs Max (DET 2024, 2nd round 47th overall) and Zam (PIT 2022, 5th round 150th overall). Victor is projected to be an early to mid second-round pick, and also had 5 points (1G 4A) in 5 games at the U18 WJC. Max won the 2026 Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s most outstanding player. Together with brother Zam (50 points [20G 30A] in 40 games), Max helped lead UMD to a berth in college hockey’s Frozen Four showdown in Las Vegas.

Last but certainly not least are the Ruck twins, who both compete for Eastern Conference Runner-up Medicine Hat in the WHL. Both forwards, Markus (23rd-ranked North American skater) led the league both in 2025-26 regular season points and assists with 108 and 87, respectively. Markus received the Bob Clarke Trophy as WHL Top Scorer in honor of this achievement. Liam (#20 ranking) finished with 104 regular-season points, and was tied for second in goals with 45. Opinions vary quite a bit in terms of their draft projections, ranging from early first-round picks to mid second-rounders. However, each player is solidly a first/second round choice.
