5/29/26: World Championship Update: Semifinals Set as Canada Beats US to Advance & Switzerland Eyes Finals Return

Tomorrow’s semifinal matchups have been decided. Host country Switzerland faces Norway in the first semifinal, followed by Canada and Finland in the later affair.

Switzerland advanced by way of its 3-1 quarterfinal victory over Sweden. The Swiss received two points apiece from Roman Josi (NSH) and Denis Malgin (5 NHL seasons with FLA, TOR & COL), and thwarted the efforts of Ivar Stenberg (2026 draft-eligible) to break Patrik Laine‘s record for most points by a draft-eligible player (12). Norway recorded a 2-0 victory over Latvia in its quarterfinal, receiving an assist from Detroit prospect Michael Brandsdegg-Nygaard and an empty-netter from Tampa Bay prospect Noah Steen to advance. Steen is enjoying an excellent tournament, tied for second in goals with 6.

In the other semifinal, Canada recorded a 4-0 victory over the United States to advance. Using their trademark exceptional depth, each of Canada’s 4 goals were scored by 4 different players. San Jose forward Macklin Celebrini scored one of these goals, continuing an excellent tournament where he is tied for second in both goals (6) and points (12). Likewise, Finland‘s 4 quarterfinal goals against Czechia came from 4 different players in its 4-1 victory. Young NHL players Anton Lundell (FLA), Lenni Hameenaho (NJD), and Konsta Helenius (BUF) each recorded one goal to help Finland advance.
