A number of impressive results occurred during Detroit’s Development Camp. The first thing to immediately jump out was the on-ice presence of forward JP Hurlbert. Selected 23rd overall in this year’s draft, Hurlbert’s smooth skating stride, elite creativity, and his innovative use of stick-handling techniques to bypass defenders were indeed worthy of a high-end pick.
Other forwards impressing were second-rounder Victor Plante, teaming up with older brother and reigning Hobey Baker winner Max Plante (also a 2nd round pick, in 2024). The Plante brothers both looked comfortable and displayed strong playmaking fundamentals. They will take that chemistry with them as teammates at the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 2026-27.
The Wings’ prospects looked strong between the pipes as well. Both Rudy Guimond and Michal Orsulak gained much playoff experience this season for their respective CHL clubs (Guimond of Moncton in the QMJHL, Orsulak of Prince Albert in the WHL), being amongst the leaders in nearly every playoff goaltending statistic. They displayed the sharp positioning and puck-tracking their respective junior teams utilized in making deep postseason runs in 2025-26. Also, Guimond demonstrated great rebound control during the week-long sessions.
Also greatly impressing during camp was goaltender Trey Augustine. The Michigan State University alum drew high praise from the development staff for his calm, mature demeanor and competitive fire. Evaluators highlighted his poise and mental toughness, noting how he responded to both positive and negative plays.
