With Matthew Schaefer graduating from prospect to unanimous Calder Trophy winner, the top spot belongs to Swedish forward Victor Eklund. His book-end in the Isles’ top five is left-winger Cole Eiserman, each with a legitimate chance at contributing to the Isles’ scoring attack this season.
Sticking with New York’s top 5, the players in that group include two forwards (Eklund & Eiserman), two d-men (Malte Gustafsson & Kashawn Aitcheson), and one goaltender (Dmitry Gamzin), all potentially impactful players. This is perhaps best exhibited by Gustafsson’s gold-medal winning performance for Sweden at the U18 World Junior Championship this past spring, leading to his being named to the tournament’s all-star team. He will play for Sweden again this December at the U20 World Junior Championship, as Sweden looks to defend its gold medal from a season ago, aided in no small part by the performance of Eklund.
The Isles’ top 5 are just a small sample size of the quality of players gracing New York’s prospect pool. This group is joined near the top by NCAA forwards Danny Nelson (Notre Dame) and Jacob Kvasnicka (Minnesota). Concerning Kvasnicka, the 2025 7th-rounder may wind up being the steal of that draft after recording 85 points (35G 50A) for the WHL’s Penticton Vees a season ago. Also, New York’s prospect depth at the D position is shown once again by the presence of strong-skating puck-mover Isaiah George, who is knocking on the door to a full-time job in Long Island.
