Former Florida Assistant General Manager Sunny Mehta has been hired as the sixth General Manager of New Jersey, replacing the recently terminated Tom Fitzgerald. Mehta was the Devils’ Director of Analytics in the years 2014-2018.
Yesterday, Vancouver fired General Manager Patrik Allvin immediately following a season in which the Canucks were the NHL’s worst team by a 14-point margin. There is no word on whether Head Coach Adam Foote or Hockey Ops President Jim Rutherford will suffer the same fate.
Chicago has signed General Manager Kyle Davidson to a multi-year extension. Although the Hawks have not made the playoffs during Davidson’s four-year tenure, he has turned one of the league’s worst prospect pools into one of its best. Team CEO Danny Wirtz also has expressed his continued support for Head Coach Jeff Blashill.
Anaheim likewise has signed General Manager Pat Verbeek to a multi-year extension. Simultaneously, the Ducks promoted former Assistant GM Mike Stapleton to Associate General Manager and Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations.
Many are calling for the termination of Detroit General Manager Steve Yzerman. Alternatively, much speculation has arisen that he will remain with the team in an advisory capacity, as opposed to handling daily hockey operations decisions. Whether or not changes are coming, the consensus is that Yzerman faces a critical off-season to address the team’s defensive needs and lack of scoring depth.
