The Isles’ recent development camp saw d-men Kashawn Aitcheson and Malte Gustafsson make the organization look very wise in selecting them in the first round of the previous two drafts.
Aitcheson, who was New York’s 17th overall pick in 2025, does appear to many to be NHL-ready due to his patented blend of old-school physicality and elite-level skill. He will begin his professional career this fall, and is projected to begin the season with the AHL’s Hamilton Hammers. Last season with Barrie in the OHL, Aitcheson broke the Colts’ career record for a d-man with 171 points, as well the single-season mark for goals day a d-man (28). Look for him to be an in-season call-up to the big club.
Gustafsson, the Isles’ 1st-rounder this year (13th overall), displayed his reputation as the best shut-down defender in this draft. He combines excellent size (6’4″ 203 LBS.), elite skating ability, and overwhelming strength and physical play to dominate on the defensive side of the puck. Soaring from a U18 player to Sweden’s top professional league last season, he is projected to return to Sweden and continue his development in the SHL.
