My updates to Detroit’s 2026 top 10 prospect pool are completed, the link to which is below. Standing out is their excellent goaltending pipeline, as well as the forwards who appear ready to contribute in Detroit this season, as well as those close to doing so.
With respect to goaltending, Trey Augustine (41st overall in 2023) holds the #1 ranking among all Wings’ prospects, and is the 5th-rated prospect throughout the NHL per TSN Chief Analyst Craig Button. After a stellar three-year career at Michigan State University, he will form a tandem with fellow top-10 prospect Michael Postava (2025 Free Agent signing) in Grand Rapids this season. Postava’s sparkling performance a season ago rendered Sebastian Cossa expendable, leading to his trade to Utah in exchange for their 2026 first-round pick. In turn, the Wings used this pick to select high-scoring forward J.P. Hurlbert of the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers. Hurlbert is the Wings’ 3rd-rated prospect, and will attend the University of Michigan this season.
With respect to forward prospects, pivot Nate Danielson (9th overall in 2023) and winger Michael Brandsdegg-Nygard (15th overall in 2024) are projected to don the winged-wheel the entire season. Both players spent time in Detroit a season ago, and Brandsdegg-Nygard finished his year by playing a key role in Norway’s bronze-medal-winning performance at the World Championship, the country’s first-ever medal in the event. Also, appearing to be on the cusp of landing NHL jobs are AHL point-per-game player Carter Mazur (70th overall in 2021) and fearless winger Carter Bear (13th overall in 2025).
The graduation of d-man Axel Sandin-Pellika to full-time NHL status now leaves a lack of top-notch puck-moving blueliners in the Wings’ prospect pool. Detroit does have AHL players William Wallinder (32nd overall in 2020) and Anton Johansson (105th overall in 2022) in the fold, who each project as reliable depth players.
