The 2026 NHL Trade Deadline may be known for what didn’t happen, as opposed to what did. For months, rumors swirled that players were on the cusp of being moved from their current teams to new destinations. The names surfacing on a regular basis were forwards Robert Thomas (STL), Blake Coleman (CGY) and Vincent Trocheck (NYR); d-man Dougie Hamilton (NJD); and goaltenders Sergei Bobrovsky (FLA) & Jesper Wallstedt (MIN). None of them went anywhere.
That is not to say that numerous deals didn’t occur. Many of these trades involved the movement of prospects looking to become full-time NHL’ers. Perhaps the player closest to meeting this goal is Winnipeg forward Isak Rosen, who already has logged 17 games of NHL experience this season between the Sabres and Jets. Also, Rosen produced more than a point per game this season for Rochester in the AHL. Former Minnesota d-man David Jiricek of Philadelphia has 80 games of NHL experience, and still has second-pairing potential.
Promising Russian forward Dmitri Buchelnikov (STL) of the KHL has changed affiliations, from Detroit to the Blues. Buchelinikov has an expiring contract at the end of this season, and word is he will be moving to North America afterword to continue his pursuit of an NHL roster spot. He is joined in the Blues’ organization by 6’7″ St. Louis goalie prospect Marcus Gidlof, who at just 20 years of age competes in the SHL in Sweden.
The New York Rangers and Calgary Flames also continued to restock their respective prospect pools with multiple players. Rangers forward prospect Aidan Thompson has a winning pedigree as a national champion at the University of Denver. The mature 24 year-old appears ready to soon join a thin New York forward group. Although still developing at the OHL level with the Flint Firebirds, Rangers forward prospect Jacob Battaglia has displayed the leadership qualities necessary to assist a rebuilding team filled with youth.
Calgary also added three prospects at the deadline in forwards Brennan Othmann, Max Curran & Jonathan Castagna. With respect to Othmann, the Flames swapped prospects with the Rangers by parting with Battaglia for a physical, NHL-ready player. For Curran and Castagna, both are better than point-per-game producers at their current levels, Curran with the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings & Castagna at Cornell University.
