Florida’s already slim playoff hopes may have taken a fatal blow this week. Brad Marchand has suffered from a lingering lower-body injury for more than a month, and the latest word is he may require surgery for repairs. Even if surgery is not required, he will be inactive for weeks with the ailment. Marchand already has missed 10 pre-Olympics games with the injury, as well as two games for Team Canada in Italy.
Marchand’s injury is nothing new to the Panthers’ top-6 this season, unfortunately. In addition to this current setback, Marchand suffered an undisclosed injury in January that cost him five games. Also, and before the season even began, Florida lost number one center Sasha Barkov with an MCL/ACL tear to his right knee requiring reconstructive surgery in September. (Originally the Barkov injury was thought to end his season entirely, although he has been skating since late January and looks to return to the lineup prior to the end of the regular season.) Adding to these injuries, top-line winger Matthew Tkachuk did not make his season debut until January 19 following off-season groin surgery.
As if these ailments to Florida’s forward group were not enough, d-man Seth Jones has been inactive since suffering a collarbone fracture on January 2 at the Winter Classic game in Miami. Jones played a key role in Florida’s 2025 Stanley Cup run, and averages roughly 25 minutes of ice time per night when healthy.
Considering all the misfortunes sustained by Florida’s key men this season, as well as the sheer number of quality teams in the hunt, it certainly appears that a new champion will raise the Cup in 2025-26.
