Yesterday, Carolina forward prospect Charlie Cerrato signed a three-year, entry-level contract beginning in 2025-26, and containing an annual cap hit of $915,000. Also, Cerrato’s contract contains signing bonuses totaling $220,000 ($70K this season, and $75K in each of the next two seasons).
As Cerrato’s contract commences immediately, he is eligible for a promotion to Carolina. However, reports indicate that Cerrato likely will remain in AHL Chicago, with whom he has been competing on an amateur tryout agreement. Cerrato is a natural pivot, and that position currently is filled in the Canes’ lineup by Sebastian Aho, Jordan Staal, and the recently extended Mark Jankowski.
Cerrato’s signing is a continuation of the departures from Penn State University this season. In addition to Cerrato, recent pro signings include forwards Aiden Fink (NSH) and Matt DiMarsico (COL), in addition to goaltender Kevin Reidler (OTT). The Nittany Lions probably will lose top forward draft prospect Gavin McKenna this summer, as he is likely to turn pro immediately following the selection process. Finally, PSU is victim of the transfer portal as well, as forward JJ Wiebusch (Free Agent) will compete for the University of Wisconsin this fall.
On the positive side for the Nittany Lions, the school recently secured a commitment from high-scoring forward Marco Mignosa (TBL) from the OHL’s Soo Greyhounds for 2026-27 (89 points [35G 54A] this season). Also, it will retain the services of star d-man and Columbus first-rounder Jackson Smith, who set a school record for most goals by a freshman d-man in school history (11) this past season.
