Both Canada and host-team Switzerland finished unbeaten in group play. Canada had 6 regulation wins and one OT win for 20 points to claim Group B, gaining a quarterfinal berth versus the United States. The only blemish on Canada’s record was Norway taking them to the extra session (Canada still won, but only earned 2 points as opposed to 3 for a regulation win). The story of the tournament for me was Norway’s surprising success en route to a 2nd-place Group B finish behind the Canadians. Also, Czechia finished 3rd in Group B, 2 points behind Norway. Finally, Sweden finished an unexpectedly low 4th place in the group, but managed to get past Slovakia 4-2 and earn a trip to the quarters and a matchup with the Swiss.
On the Group A side, earlier today Switzerland defeated Finland 4-2 to claim 1st place with a perfect 7-0 record. Second-place Finland also has had an excellent tournament with 6 wins, and only succumbed to the Swiss due to a late 5-on-5 goal then an empty-netter. Latvia finished in 3rd place, due in large part to a 4-2 defeat of the 4th-place Americans. The US since has rebounded from that loss with consecutive wins over Hungary and Austria.
